TABLE OF CONTENTS
To provide captions on a video for your learners, use the auto-generated captions in YouTube to create captions and upload the video in Canopy using the YouTube link. Follow the steps below to learn how to create captions in YouTube.
Using Youtube to Create Captions
Step 1:
Login to YouTube and select 'Create' in the top right hand corner and 'Upload Video'. Drag and drop or search for your video file on your computer to upload the video to YouTube.
Step 2:
Follow the steps within YouTube to complete the upload.
- Details page
- You are required to indicate if the video is 'Yes, it's made for kids' or 'No, it's not made for kids'. All other fields can be edited but are not required. Select 'Next' to move to the next step.
- Video Elements page
- If this is your first time uploading a video the subtitles option will be unavailable. We will turn it on in step 3 and the next time you use YouTube you would be able to turn on the subtitles at this point.
- If this is not your first time uploading a video, select 'Add' in the 'Add subtitles' option.
- Select 'Next'.
- Checks page
- This page will check for copyright issues, you should be able to Select 'Next' and move to the last page.
- Visibility page
- Choose between Private, Unlisted, or Public.
- If you are an instructor who will be uploading the video into Canopy but do not want the video to be visible in YouTube, choose 'Unlisted' and 'Save'.
- Choose between Private, Unlisted, or Public.
Note: If you were able to add subtitles on the Video Elements step then you are now ready to move to Step 4. If this was your first video upload and the subtitles option was unavailable follow the instructions in step 3.
Step 3:
Select 'Subtitles' in the left navigation menu of YouTube. Select your default language and 'Confirm'.
Step 4:
Click on the video thumbnail found in the top left corner to view your video in YouTube. In the video options along the bottom, select the 'CC' icon to turn on the closed captioning. You will now see the captions when playing the video.
Instructors can now copy the YouTube link and paste the link in the '+ Video' content block in Canopy.
